Social Media’s Impact on Court Proceedings

When in trial, you are fighting two battles: the court of law and the court of public opinion. The court of public opinion has the potential to influence the court of law by using social media content to sway jurors. The Sixth Amendment of our Constitution guarantees a trial by an impartial jury, but in today’s digital age, social media poses significant risks to fair trials and juror impartiality, ultimately having the potential to impact the proceedings and outcomes of a case.[1] When the jury remains impartial, it helps ensure a fair trial, and we, the people, can trust that the verdict is rooted in facts, rather than social media content, outside assumptions, or pressures.[2] Jurors may unknowingly be influenced by the social media content they have access to at their fingertips, despite being instructed to stay neutral and base their verdict solely on the evidence presented in court.

SB 30 – The “Trucking Bill”

During the 89th Texas legislature, A bill authored under Texas Senator Charles Schwertner, SB 30, otherwise known as the “Trucking Bill” was introduced as a major tort reform bill aimed to reduce excessive jury awards referred to as “nuclear verdicts” in civil lawsuits that result in medical or injury damages.

Self-Driving Cars: Benefits, Risks, and Rights

On December 9th, 2025, Mr. Chris Riotta-Rogers of San Francisco, California, went viral on TikTok for his “first and last Waymo ride.” The 20-second-long clip, amassing nearly 28 million views, captured Mr. Riotta-Rogers commencing a ride in a Waymo, a driverless car, which, in the tumultuous moment that followed, abruptly pulled out in front of another moving car traveling down a steep hill. The other car honked and slammed to a halt, inches from the Waymo, as the shaken Waymo passenger sat helplessly in the back seat.[1]
