Pros and Cons of the Texas Constitutional Carry Law

On June 16, 2021, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 1927, known colloquially as the “Constitutional Carry” bill, into law. Starting on Sept. 1, 2021, Texans 21 and over will no longer need a license to carry a pistol (openly or concealed) as long as they are not already excluded from firearm possession by another State or Federal law. Previously, Texans were required to obtain a state-issued license which required training, a proficiency exam, and a background check. With the passage of this law, Texas will become the 20th state, as well as the largest state, to dispense with these requirements.

Tort Reform and the Texas Medical Liability Act

In 2003, the Texas state legislature passed House Bill 4, which amended Chapter 74 of the Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code. This bill, later codified as the Texas Medical Liability Act, made sweeping changes to the way in which medical malpractice cases, also called health care liability claims, can be brought before a court of law.

Texas Winter Storm Lawsuits

Last week Texas experienced a historic winter storm knocking out the power of 4 million, leaving around 70 dead, and costing Texans at least $21 billion in damages. As energy demand rose, the supply of energy fell due to outdated power generators failing, which ultimately deprived the power grid of energy. ERCOT and CenterPoint ignored recommendations in 2001 to winterize their equipment, resulting in rolling blackouts and freezing homes across Texas.
